The Jalur Gemilang flew high above the world yesterday as businessman Ravichandran Tharumalingam conquered Mount Everest. Ravichandran reached the peak of the world’s tallest mountain at 8,848.15 metres at 2.15pm (4.15pm Malaysian time) yesterday, through Tibet. He had begun the last leg of his climb from Camp VI at 10pm Malaysian time. Ravichandran’s journey, however, is not over as the climber has to continue down to Camp V at 7,600 m as Camp VI is not suitable for a long rest. A statement from TR Everest Solo Expedition for Charity 2006, asked Malaysians to continue to pray for his safety and health. The statement also said it was hoped that Ravichandran’s success would motivate all youth in Malaysia as it coincided with National Youth Day. It also stated that Ravichandran would send photographs taken at the summit of Mount Everest once he reached Camp II (5,300 m). In a telephone interview on Sunday from Camp V, Ravichandran had said that he was a little weak as it was difficult to consume food at that altitude. Ravichandran, 42, began his "charity climb" on April 1.
All donations to this effort will be given to eight charities, including Makna (National Cancer Council), the National Deaf Association, SSL (Sau Seng Lum) Stroke Rehabiliation centre.
He is the first Malaysian to climb Mount Everest solo and also the first climber from an Asean country to scale it from the side which faces Tibet.
